Tactile Methods to Teach Sight Words to Kindergarteners

- What’s a sight word?
Words like the, of, you, and were all require memorization and recognition by sight. They are impossible to decode using standard phonics patterns.
Some of the words we consider sight words are decodable, but they appear frequently. These are sometimes referred to as “high frequency words,” yet it’s been noticed that the terms “sight words” and “high frequency words” are used interchangeably. Words like and, that, as, on, and in are decodable, but they’re also frequently taught as sight words.
- Which words count as sight words?
There are a few alternative answers to this question. Consider your list if your school system is evaluating a list of words. If your school or district does not provide a list of words, you can look up Dolch Lists and Fry’s Lists online. While Dolch and Fry lists are popular, each reading program appears to produce its own list. The majority of the listings are pretty similar.
Considering sight words take awhile to learn, you might wish to stick to terms that are both common and infrequent, or that aren’t decodable. Children will know to decode and, had, last, then, with, not, much, and so on as they progress through the reading program if you teach a reading program based on the phonics approach alongside sight word memory. Don’t waste time teaching students how to memorize words that can be decoded.

Students can acquire sight words in a number of different methods. The key is to expose yourself frequently. A read-spell-read exercise can be done in small groups or as a whole class. With flash cards, parents may simply learn how to perform this activity at home.
Hands on activities to teach sight words
- Using blocks
Make a traditional block-building game, such as Jenga, into a tool for pupils to learn sight words. Write a high-frequency word on each block to begin. Before the next player gets their turn, have the student who successfully removes the block from the tower and places it on top use the sight word in a sentence. Players can also read and type the text while moving blocks for a simpler variation.
- Use Tic Tac Toe
Tic-Tac-Toe is a popular game among children. To add a twist, have the student read a sight word and then utilize it in a sentence, or read and spell it before writing an X or O on the board. Use flashcards to learn sight words.
Try using a variety of words on the board along with an X or O.
- Got shaving cream?
Learning can be a messy process at times! Put shaving cream on the desks and tables, and have the kids use their fingers to write out their sight words. Check out a local dollar store or buy in bulk at a warehouse club store to save money on supplies.
It’s simple to clean up. Simply clean the tables by wiping them down and spraying them clean. Another advantage is that the shaving cream doubles as a cleanser and cleans your table top!
